Wednesday night at the Showroom THE FIRETREE bowed a strong set of guitar driven rockers from their debut EP The Space Between.
Although there were five people onstage the focus was clearly on DALE BUCHAN and JOSIE CUBITS.
That’s hardly surprising since the telegenic twosome alternate on lead vocals, blend their voices to produce pleasing harmonies and contribute original material.
The pair also offer a striking contrast in visual presence. Prancing with coltish glee, Cubits seemed to be enjoying the moment while Buchan applied himself to the task at hand with a certain dogged intensity which perhaps belied his enthusiasm at embarking on the group’s first tour outside of their native Australia.
Songs sounded more muscular than audio clips on group website/myspace page with “Laydown” being a notable exception, Cubits’ lead vocals on the ballad beauty framed by shimmery percussion.
Other highlights included “Riches” with its plea to be more environmentally aware and “Highway Song”, another rocker with such a propulsive energy one could almost visualize scenery flashing by the window while traveling through the Australian countryside.

The show too was great and was broadcast live on the net. We also got a concert review in the local news blog which you can read online here [...]
